REQUESTED ACTION (S)
a) Request approval and authorization for the Chairman to sign the letter to Senator Richard Roth requesting a rejection of a $1.7 million cut in the 2017-18 Governor's Budget for the Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet)
The California state budget for Fiscal Year 2017-18 includes a $1.7 million cut in the CalVet's budget to reduce funding for Veteran Services Division Support. These positions are primarily tasked with helping to reduce federal backlogs in veteran compensation claims and appeals and improving efficiency of California's new claim submissions. Although this is not a budget cut to County subvention, this is a permanent reduction to the CalVet staff that assists our local Veterans Service Office with claims. Less CalVet staff means longer waiting periods on claim decisions for our veterans and their families.
