REQUESTED ACTION (S)

Authorize Chairman to Sign Letter of Support for North State Super Region

BACKGROUND INFO

Please see the attached DRAFT letter of Support prepared by the North State Super Region in support of improvements on US Highway 101 between Klamath and Crescent City, known as Last Chance Grade.

All 18 northern California Counties are working together to support the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) request for funding to perform environmental clearance for geotechnical investigation regarding a new potential alignment

·              This funding is a critical step in ensuring the long term use of a coastal highway that will potentially experience a major failure or require more difficult, repetitive, and costly maintenance efforts similar to, and worse, than seen over the past several decades.

·              A significant failure at Last Chance Grade would severely limit access to the area and force traffic to detour approximately 320 miles, six to eight hours, to gain access to their destinations. Caltrans has estimated a full closure of the route would cost the local economy alone $130 million per year.

Staff recommends authorization for the TCTC Chairman to sign the attached letter.
